Ultrasound technician salary is among the highest in the health care industry.  The salary of course depends on the location, specialization and demand in that geographical location. Being flexible with one’s schedule and being open to weekends and over-time can go a long way in earning a good salary.  Especially in fertility clinics where ovulation is being monitored, ultrasound techs are in high demand as they perform scans during the weekend to aid in scheduling subsequent fertility procedures.  Also the aging baby-boomer population will result in a greater need for ultrasounds and being a safe and cost-effective procedure, ultrasonography is only going to grow in popularity.

According to the Department of Labor and Statistics in May of 2008, the median annual salary of ultrasound technicians was $61,980.  The higher salaries ranged upwards of $83,950 and the lower range was roughly $43,600.  Additionally, salaries of diagnostic medical sonographers in hospital settings earned $61,870 while those in doctor’s offices made $62,340 in May 2008.

The median hourly pay of a ultrasound technician is $30.95 and the median annual wage is $64,380.  The industries with the highest levels of employment according to the Department of labor and statistics are general medical and surgical hospitals, in offices of physicians, in clinical laboratories, in outpatient care centers, in specialty hospitals (psychiatry and substance abuse), in employment services and in colleges and universities.

As mentioned earlier relocating to the location of a job opportunity is perhaps the quickest way to get the salary that one seeks.  California, Florida, New York, Texas and Ohio have the highest demand and thus the highest number of diagnostic medical sonographers among the 50 states.  The states with the highest concentration of jobs in this occupation are Florida, South Dakota, New Mexico, Alabama and New Jersey.  The states that have the highest salary for ultrasound technician are Massachusetts, Oregon, Colorado, California and Washington.  A metropolis undoubtedly offers the highest salary and if one is willing to relocate, then one can avail of this.  The metropolis with the highest employment levels for sonographers is New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, Nassau, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Baltimore, and Boston.
