Diagnostic medical sonography is a technique that requires a high level of expertise but there are some hoops to jump through before reaping the rich rewards of this profession. There are several requirements that need to be met before an individual qualifies for entrance into an ultrasound technician degree. To be considered for the program a candidate must have a degree; either an Associate of Applied Science degree or a Bachelor’s degree.

Successful completion of a nationally recognized regionally accredited two year Associates of Applied Science Degree in an Allied Health field that is importantly patient-care related with clinical rotations. The following coursework, if not included in this degree, must be completed as well before application can be made to the program:Course Description with Credit Hours
Human Anatomy and Physiology I – at least 4 credit hours with lab
Human Anatomy and Physiology II- at least 4 credit hours with lab
Medical Terminology- at least 3 credit hours
General Physics
College Algebra or a higher math
Students that have majored in Radiologic Technology are preferred, however other examples of professionals who are eligible include but not limited to:
Nuclear Medicine
Respiratory Therapist
Occupational Therapist/Physical Therapist Assistant
Registered Nurse
Ophthalmic Technician
Sleep Diagnostics TechnicianBachelor’s Degree

There are physical demands on ultrasound techs that one must be aware of before commencing the course. In order to perform the duties of an ultrasound technician a candidate must:
Push and pull a wheelchair with patient the seated in the wheelchair.
Lean over to lock the wheelchair and lift footrests.
Push and pull a stretcher with patient resting on stretcher, lock and unlock stretcher for the patient to transfer.
Push mobile equipment, and maneuver around patient’s bed and through hallways in surgical suites.
Verbally instruct patient in a clear, concise, easily understandable manner.
Visually assess the patient’s condition.
Visually assess the sonographic image.
Interact appropriately with patients, co-workers, visitors, and hospital staff.
Read and comprehend written communications (i.e. Charts, exam requisitions). Provide written communication to medical and technical staff.
Demonstrate manual dexterity in handling of items such as cassettes, syringes and needles, sterile items and transducers.
Ability to ascend and descend stairway in case of fire or absence of elevator.
Descend to the floor, resting on knees for performing chest compressions.
Use extended arms and force of shoulders and upper back to compress chest 2 inches.
Respond appropriately to sounds, i.e. patient voice and movements, at a normal conversational volume.
Respond appropriately to equipment signals such as sound and light.
Manipulate mechanical and patient care equipment simultaneously, i.e. dials, switches, push buttons,Siemens Ultrasound Transducer keyboards, transducer, and blood pressure equipment.
Perform for a prolonged period without breaks, e.g., typical shift of eight hours.
Demonstrate adequate visual acuity to differentiate among subtle shades of grey/color used in diagnostic sonography image formation.Legal Requirements
Students seeking enrollment in designated ultrasound tech programs requiring participation in clinical training in local hospitals and related clinics/agencies must have clean criminal record. Background checks are necessary as the student will interact very closely with patients in private settings.Patient monitor ecg battery It is an important part of the application process. The background check is performed by local state police and the FBI; they are paid for by the student.
